CNN —Newly crowned three-time NBA Most Valuable Player (MVP) Nikola Jokić put on a show and proved why he is the rightful recipient of the award in the Denver Nuggets’ 112-97 playoff victory over the Minnesota Timberwolves on Tuesday. So good was Jokić’s performance that teammates and opponents alike were lavishing him with praise after the game. He’s the best player in the NBA, he showed it the last three games, three games in a row. Only five teams in NBA history have come back to win a best-of-seven series when losing the first two at home. Brunson, who bounced back impressively after a poor showing in Game 4, also added seven assists and four rebounds.

CNN —Denver Nuggets star point guard Jamal Murray has come under criticism after he was spotted throwing a heat pack onto the court during the reigning champions’ 106-80 playoff loss against the Minnesota Timberwolves on Monday. While on the bench toward the end of the second quarter, Murray could be seen throwing the heat pack while the Timberwolves were on offense. The object landed near the basket with several players in the vicinity of the heat pack. Murray’s behavior was described as “inexcusable” and “dangerous” by Timberwolves head coach Chris Finch following the conclusion of the game. I knew a heating pack was on the floor, but it was not in my field of vision.”Per various reporters, Murray did not speak to the media following the game.

SALT LAKE CITY (AP) — One thunderous dunk provided a perfect snapshot of Anthony Edwards' second-half dominance Monday night. Edwards threw down a monster slam over John Collins of the Utah Jazz in the third quarter, helping the Minnesota Timberwolves to a 114-104 victory but leaving both players banged up after the play. Timberwolves veteran point guard Mike Conley said it might have been the best dunk he's ever witnessed in person. Edwards’ dunk gave a short-handed Minnesota team an emotional boost during a critical stretch. “He’s always been a guy who can really flip a game around,” Timberwolves coach Chris Finch said.

CNN —Three-time NBA Defensive Player of the Year Rudy Gobert has been fined $100,000 after he appeared to make a money gesture towards an official during the Minnesota Timberwolves’ 113-104 overtime loss against the Cleveland Cavaliers on Friday. The action appeared to be directed at referee Scott Foster who had handed out the foul. And although Foster missed it, fellow official Natalie Sago saw Gobert’s gesture and assessed a technical foul to the center, which proved to be costly for Minnesota. The $100k fine is a significant step up from the $25,000 fine that he was handed for his third offense in 2023. Minnesota assistant coach Micah Nori, who was filling in for head coach Chris Finch due to illness, described the gesture as unacceptable and lamented the timing of the technical foul call.

NEW YORK (AP) — The NBA announced Tuesday there were 10 incorrectly officiated calls in the last 2 minutes of Charlotte's comeback win at Minnesota, when the Timberwolves lost 128-125 to the Hornets despite a franchise-record 62 points by Karl-Anthony Towns. One was simply a foul called on the wrong Charlotte player. The league said the officials missed two fouls on the Hornets as they defended Towns on his drive to the basket in the closing seconds with Minnesota trailing by one point. Terry Rozier should have been called for reaching in during the dribble, and Leaky Black should have been whistled for a shooting foul. ___Political Cartoons View All 253 Images

MIAMI (AP) — Khris Middleton had a thought pop into his head immediately after Milwaukee topped Miami to finish group play in the NBA’s In-Season Tournament with an unbeaten record. Boston outscored the teams in its group by 27 points, compared with a plus-22 differential for Orlando and plus-20 for Brooklyn. That meant the Celtics won East Group C.“You just know what the reason is,” Nets forward Mikal Bridges said. The West race didn't end up with quite as much drama as the East had with the down-to-the-wire differential chasing. The teams that lose in the quarterfinals will play a to-be-added regular-season game against each other, East vs. East and West vs. West.

PHOENIX (AP) — Phoenix Suns guard Bradley Beal will be out for at least the next three weeks as he continues to recover from a low back strain that has kept him out for the majority of the season. The three-time All-Star has played in just three games this season, averaging 17.3 points and 5.3 rebounds. The team said Friday that the new injury timeline was “determined following further evaluation and consultation.” The Suns added he would be reevaluated after the three weeks. The Suns came into the season with high hopes, largely thanks to the star trio of Kevin Durant, Devin Booker and Beal, but the group hasn't played together through 11 games. Phoenix has a 5-6 record this season heading into Friday night's game against the Utah Jazz.

A game between the Minnesota Timberwolves and Golden State Warriors had barely begun, Tuesday night in San Francisco, when the rowdiest scene of the early NBA season unfolded. Just over a minute and a half into the contest, Minnesota’s Jaden McDaniels and Golden State’s Klay Thompson, who had tussled for rebounding position, gripped and tore at one another’s jerseys at midcourt, spinning in circles as referees’ whistles blew. When Rudy Gobert, the Timberwolves’ 7-foot-1 center, tried to pry them apart, Draymond Green—the Warriors’ ace defender and agitator—leapt onto Gobert’s back and clamped an arm around his neck.

Indiana’s Tyrese Haliburton got questions about the same topic more often than he could remember this summer: The money, the money, the money. There are players with bigger salaries, even players with larger extensions — for example, Boston's Jaylen Brown signed one that could be worth $304 million this summer. But for players like Haliburton, Edwards, Ball and Bane, this is a new chapter. Haliburton, Edwards, Ball and Bane will average about that much in annual salary for the foreseeable future starting in the 2024-25 season.
